IV. Death by Water
Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell
And the profit and loss.
A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell
He passed the stages of his age and youth
Entering the whirlpool.
Gentile or Jew
O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.
IV Mort dans l’eau
Phlebas, le Phénicien, mort depuis deux semaines,
Oublia le cri des mouettes, et la profonde houle
Et les pertes et profits.
Un courant sous marin
Emporta ses os en un murmure. Dans son ascension et sa chute
Il passa son âge et sa jeunesse
Entrant dans le Malstrom.
Gentil ou Juif
Oh toi qui tournes la roue et regarde le vent,
Regarde Phlebas, qui fut jadis aussi beau et grand que toi.
